Winter Series Race Day.
The day started with marginal wind, in fact we waited for 90 minutes for the wind to come in enough to get i some races. Not a great start for Craig, our newest club member, on his first blokart race. Finally we had wind from the NW but it was swinging around quite a bit, just to make the sailing a bit tactical. Everyone was on 5.5 metre sails, needed because of the sudden drops in wind at times. A couple of races were stopped and restarted after the wind dropped out but towards the middle of the afternoon, a steady breeze came through so that we completed 10 races, 5 in each division. The course was challenging with a short down wind leg where gybe angles were important and then a tack along the runway back to the start, sometimes making it in a couple of tacks, other times several needed as the wind swung more to the west.
There were a few missing but the racing was still close enough to keep everyone on their toes. John P in light weights excelled in the lighter conditions and came away with 3 wins and 2 seconds. Neil and Bob got the other wins.. The heavy weight wins went to Paul with 3 and Russell with 2. Wayne and Mark came close at times but had to put up with the minor placings.
Getting a puff at the right time made a difference and making sure speed was up on the downwind gybes helped get around the corner and back to the main runway.
Teams Racing is in 2 weeks time. Let Russell know this week if you want to be in a team.
The Mid Winter Xmas dinner is at the Secret Garden in Otahuhu on the 13 July. Please pay through the online shop on the website. We need to know numbers at the beginning of that week.
